Scholarships & Prizes in Asian Studies

In-country study in Indonesia (through ACICIS), Japan or China is part of the Bachelor of Asian Studies degree at Murdoch. A variety of scholarships, awards or other grants are available either through Murdoch or external organisations to help students finance in-country study and other study, research, and professional, personal or community development programs. There are also a number of cash prizes for which students of Asian Studies are eligible.

STA Travel $300,000 in travel grants

STA Travel runs the STA Travel Trust offering $300,000 in airline tickets and cash over 3 years to support projects that further ideas of peace, tolerance and understanding through travel.

STA calls for applications from individuals and groups requiring financial support or travel grants. Grants will be awarded to selected individuals and projects that support the STA Travel Trust's aim of creating a better society through travel.

Submissions for sponsorship will be reviewed and grants allocated three times a year in June, October and February.

ST Leong Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Sow-Theng Leong, Professor of Asian Studies at Murdoch University from 1985 to 1987, and aims to promote academic excellence in the study of Asian languages and cultures. Any Murdoch student enrolled at undergraduate level or above is eligible to apply for the scholarship, which is intended to help finance study in Southeast Asia, China or Japan. Study in the region may include either language study or research at honours or postgraduate level. The grant provided by the scholarship will be determined by the Committee, but is expected to be about A$1200. The Committee reserves the right not to award any scholarship if in its view there are no suitable candidates. Applications should include academic transcript, detailed study proposal (including host institution), dates of proposed study, and the connection of the proposed study program with the student's Murdoch degree.

Western Australian Government Japanese Scholarships

These scholarships aim to provide promising young Australian students or graduates with the opportunity to spend a year studying at a Japanese university. Applicants should have completed at least two years of full time study in an appropriate university course by the end of the year of application and should have a good knowledge of Japanese language. In 1999 the scholarships included a return air fare, an initial payment of $3000 for fees/expenses, and a maintenance allowance of 226,600 Yen per month. Applications close in July each year.

Japanese Government (Monbusho) Scholarships

The Japanese Government offers research scholarships to Australian citizens for study at Japanese Universities. Applicants must be graduates or final year students under 35 years of age. Applications close in June each year for scholarships tenable the following year. There are also scholarships available for undergraduate study and Japanese language study in Japan. Association of International Education, Japan (AIEJ) Scholarships

These scholarships are offered each year to students undertaking study at a Japanese university as part of an exchange arrangement with their home university. Students can apply only by nomination of the Japanese university, through Japanese Studies at Murdoch. Applications close in January, May and September each year. Sir Edward Weary Dunlop Asia Fellowships

These fellowships provide assistance of up to $20 000 for Australian citizens aged 21 to 40 to carry out a project or study program in an Asian country. Programs may be from a variety of disciplines and applicants must show a commitment, in the spirit of Sir Edward, to community service and the development of closer links between Asia and Australia. Closing date is normally the end of August for the following year.

Queen's Trust Grants

Young Australians aged 18-28 are eligible to apply for grants of up to $15 000 to undertake projects that further their personal or professional development. Grants are awarded for a variety of purposes, including to fund study that cannot be undertaken in Australia. The Queen's Trust looks particularly for individuals who are pursuing excellence in their chosen field, advancing Australian youth, developing community leadership and developing skills which will enrich the Australian community.

Rotary Foundation Scholarships

The Rotary Foundation offers ambassadorial scholarships providing a stipend of up to $US25,000 for a year of study to be undertaken abroad. Applicants must have completed at least two years study at tertiary level. The scholarships are aimed at promoting world peace and understanding.
