Double Majors

A feature of enrolment at Murdoch, and one commonly considered by students, is enrolment in two programmes at the same time. This is called a double programme or double major enrolment. If you are considering this or want more information, then you should read the section on 'Enrolment in Programme' under "Undergraduate Studies" in the Murdoch University Handbook and see your Division Executive Officer. The following points are important:

  • Usually the requirements of both programmes can be completed within the normal length of a degree. However, in some cases a student may have to complete more units.
  • The full requirements of both programmes have to be completed. Appropriate individual units can be credited towards the requirements of both programmes, up to a limit of twelve points at Part II.
  • While the University takes common double programme enrolments into consideration in the teaching timetable, you should expect that your selection of units will be constrained.
  • Where the contents of two programmes overlap substantially, the University does not allow enrolment in both programmes. The Murdoch University Handbook lists these combinations.
  • Some programmes are subject to quota. There is an application procedure for entry into such programmes, with a closing date in November for entry the following year.

If you are considering a double programme enrolment you should see your Division Executive Officer. They will give you an outline of what is involved, and ask you to draw up a tentative three (or more) year schedule of units. This schedule will then be discussed in detail at a second meeting (or by correspondence for external students). This two stage process is designed to make sure that you have looked carefully at the programme structures and the units available, and to ensure that you complete the requirements of both programmes in the minimum time.
