Postgraduate Studies In Philosophy

The Philosophy Programme offers the following postgraduate research degree programmes at both the Masters (MPhil) and Doctoral (PhD) levels.

Applicants for these degrees must normally hold at least an upper second honours degree or its equivalent. In special cases evidence of other scholarly or professional attainments involving research preparation may also be considered as appropriate for entry to these degree programmes.

For a full-time student the normal period of candidature is eighteen months to three years for the MPhil degree and three to five years for the PhD degree. These periods are doubled for part-time students. In some cases students who have enrolled initially for an MPhil degree may, at the completion of twelve months satisfactory progress, transfer into a PhD degree.

Apart from meeting entrance requirements, applications for postgraduate degrees in Philosophy are assessed on the availability of appropriate supervision. Currently the programme is able to offer supervision of projects in moral and political philosophy, contemporary European philosophy, feminist philosophy, phenomenology, existentialism, history of philosophy and environmental philosophy.

During the course of their canditure students are normally given the opportunity to tutor in several undergraduate units.

For those not inclined towards a research programme of study, the programme also offers a Graduate Certificate in Ethics.
