Compulsory Unit: States, Governance and Globalisation
Semester 1
4 points
“Governance” began to replace “government” as a focus of political science in the early 1990s, as analysts realised that social goals were increasingly achieved, not by the implementation of policy by states, but by the cooperative activities of networks of public, private and voluntary agencies. These operate at an international and local, as well as national, level. This unit examines three aspects of the shift to ‘governance’:
- What are the implications of network governance for democratic politics in industrialised countries?
- Within multilevel governance, how can meaningful jurisdictions be established?
- And how have international agencies promoted conceptions of ‘good’ governance in the developing world?

Sustainability and development
Students with an interest in sustainability and development can undertake one or more elective units in Murdoch’s School of Sustainability.
