Research and PostgraduatesThe Division of Arts has approximately 500 postgraduate research scholars currently working toward their degrees. Murdoch University has one of the highest proportions of academic staff supervising PhD's making it an excellent choice for those wishing to undertake research degrees. Interdisciplinary supervision is encouraged. The Division aims to provide the best possible supervision for all research scholars and institutes a policy of best practice together with a commitment to increase available research facilities and infrastructure. Regular postgraduate seminars and skills workshops are held across the Division and conference travel funds are awarded on a competitive basis to Scholars presenting a paper at a domestic or international conference. The Division has a variety of major resources available to enhance postgraduate research including audio and video production facilities, a theatre, computing laboratories, a driving simulator, and a satellite reception and viewing facility. Asia Research Centre (website)Centre for Irish Studies (Director:Associate Professor Bob Reece) The Centre for Irish Studies is a collaborative organisation involving Murdoch University, the Australian-Irish Heritage Association (AIHA) and other Western Australian tertiary institutions. The Centre aims to develop an understanding and appreciation of the 'scattering' of the Irish people; the Irish contribution to the development of Australia culturally, economically and politically; and historical and contemporary Ireland. The Centre fosters and coordinates Irish Studies research in Western Australia by means of seminars, conferences, publications and networking nationally and internationally via the internet. Areas of specific interest are the migration of the Irish to Australia and their impact; the literature, language, history, art, music and dance of Ireland and Irish Australia; historical and contemporary Ireland; the colonisation of Ireland and Australia and its impact on indigenous cultures. The Centre is developing an extensive collection of microform research materials for the use of honours and postgraduate students and visiting scholars. It also coordinates the teaching of Irish Studies courses at undergraduate level and works with the AIHA in arranging public lectures and summer schools.
